I LOVE my Seven Year Pen!

They don't call it the seven-year pen for nothing! Hidden inside is a jumbo ink cartridge that holds enough ink to write for two meters, every single day for seven years (5,110 meters, more than 3 miles of ink)! Imagine it: just two pens would last a child from kindergarten to high school graduation! (You'll have to get them a third one for college and grad school, though.)

I bought the Seven Year Pen from a little gift shop a while back and loved it so much I bought a few for Christmas gifts too. When I decided to carry gifts and such at Stash I knew I had to get this pen to offer to the masses as well. It writes smooth, has cute jesigns, and just makes me happy to use.

Trunk Show

My name is Billie Jo Norsworthy and I’m proud to be part of Wyoming’s ranching tradition. My family has been ranching on this land for several generations and we are fortunate to be stewards of beautiful Copper Mountain. This is land that once belonged to Lucy Morrison Moore – “The Sheep Queen of Wyoming.” It’s the spirit of Lucy and the wonder of this majestic land that inspires my dye colors and love of my sheep. May you find the legacy and lore….the creation and color….and the wonder of Wyoming in my work.

I believe that my wools are the finest available. They are hand-dyed primarily using wildflowers as inspiration. I use a combination of

Gay Wool, Cushing's, and natural plant dyes. My sheep are coated

to protect their wool from dirt, weeds, and sun. After shearing,

the fleeces are skirted, then sent to The Shepherd's Mill in

Kansas to be processed.

After the yarn, roving or felt returns to us, I dye everything in the

back room/bathroom/storage room. In the summer months, all of

my dye work is set with the intense Wyoming sun. The dye color

combinations are inspired by my childhood love of wildflowers.

Here are the newest Churchmouse patterns at Stash! I love using these patterns, they are so well written and the photographs by Jared Flood are amazing! I'm so excited about knitting these patterns, I've already started on the "Bias Before and After Scarf" (top row middle). I'm using Pagewood Farms Artesana Lace weight in a beautiful purple. I can't wait to get this finished and on my neck so I can start the "Shoulder Cozy" (top row on the left)!

My latest knitting projects include this wrap from the cover of Interweave's premiere magazine "Knit.Wear"

I love knitting cables and this wrap was fun to knit! The BIG braided cable is a six by six cable and the shaping in done by increases and decreases within the purl sections between the braids. I'm at the point where I need to graft the edges together, add the ribbing a block the piece. I need to have about 20 minutes of peace before I tackle the kitchner stitch over 60 stitches. There is a great tutorial with the pattern on grafting knit and purl stitches.

Another project I'm doing that I am quite proud of is my first ever toe-up sock. Socks are not on my priority list of things to knit, but that may change. I usually do the traditional cuff-down sock, make that a cuff-down booty sock (very short leg). I remember being amazed at all the parts of a sock and how they knit up and came together the first time I knit a sock. I have to admit, that awe has fizzled. I mostly do socks now because I "have" to for a class or a sample. I asked Kate, who teaches the toe-up sock class at Stash, to show me the cast on used for toe-up magic loop. After I got the method for the cast on, I decided to continue with the toe, then the foot, then the heel (which was so much fun), then the leg, I still have to finish the cuff, then start the other sock! Kate insists I should learn two-at-a-time soon, I'm not so sure juggling two balls of sock yarn on a size US1 40" needles is my cup of tea, but we'll see.

So these two projects have been put to the side, only for a day or two, 'cuz I started another project! Now I'm knitting the Eudora Hat by Dull Roar, which is a slouchy hat with a turn under contrast brim, welt accents, short row shaping and staggered decreases. I do have to admit the turn under brim was a little of a pain, but once that was done, the rest of the hat is worth it! I'm using Aslan Trends Baby Llama, and new yarn at Stash, for the main hat and for the contrast a little Manos Silk I had laying around. I'm finished with the welts, I have not done these before and they were fun. The pattern walks you though it. Just pick up the purl stitch a few rows under the row you are knitting and knit the two stitches together. I just started the short row shaping, this pattern uses a way to short rows that I've not used before, but again the explaination is wonderful. I'm having so much fun with this hat and all the techniques that are involved in knitting it, I may just have it finished by the end of the night, if I stop posting to the blog and get back to knitting! As a matter of fact there is so much technique in this one little project, there may be a class in the future :)

Amigurumi Contest at Stash!

Stash will have a Amigurumi contest in June! I'm not sure if you are aware, but I love knitting Amigurumi and anything sweet and fun! If you look around the shop you are sure to find a little friend in almost every corner. Summer is the perfect time to knit or crochet one for yourself. In any project you are sure to learn a new technique that you can use in future projects.

Now for the rules:

Amigurumi: The word is derived from a combination of the Japanese words ami, meaning crocheted or knitted, and nuigurumi, meaning stuffed doll.[1]Amigurumi are typically animals, but can include artistic renderings or inanimate objects endowed with anthropomorphic features.

Knit or crochet amigurumi contest rules:

1. You may use any amigurumi book or single pattern for your project. You may also make up your own amigurumi using the pictures in your head.

2. Supplies for your amigurumi must be purchased at Stash to be entered in the contest. Upon purchasing your supplies, please let us know you would like to participate in the contest and we will help you fill out a registration form, which will include your pattern source, project supplies, and receipt of purchase

3. The final day to turn in your amigurumi will be 4:00 p.m. Monday, June 20th…NO EXCEPTIONS. Your amigurumi will be tagged with a number to identify for voting. Your Amigurumi will be returned to you after the contest. Please pick up your Amigurumi by July 10th.

4. You will receive a coupon for 15% off your next yarn purchase at Stash when you bring in your amigurumi.

5. All Amigurumi will be on display at Stash, on the Blog, and on Facebook starting Monday, June 20th thru Monday, June 27th.

Sunday Sling

I finally brought out my sewing machine and started sewing again! I forgot how much I love following a pattern, using amazing fabric, and having a great bag in the end! This is the Reversible Sunday Sling by Amy Butler. I've had my eye on this pattern ever since it was delivered to the shop. This bag could truly hold everything, even make a great weekend bag. My intention for it is a diaper bag for a good friend who is having a baby in August. I used Joel Dewberry Aviary 2 fabrics for the bag, it was hard to decide which of his amazing colorways to use, until my friend mentioned something about turquoise, orange, and white in the nursery. Then it was an obvious choice!

It seems the closer we get to summer the colder and more grey the days have been. You can escape the grey and with the amazing rainbow of colors that have been arriving at my door. I love opening the boxes and seeing all that the summer yarns have to offer. Here you see CEY cotton bamboo prints. New this year and oh so lovely! Joel Dewberry Aviary 2

One of the first lines of fabric I ever ordered for Stash was Joel Dewberry Aviary (the original collection). I remember how excited Carol and I were to start the business at The Barn and have a selection of unique yarns and modern fabrics. The Aviary fabric was and still is my favorite. I have a few yards "stashed" away, waiting for the special project. Whenever I go through my stash and come across this fabric, I can't help but smile at the memories. Which is why I was so excited to see JD come out with Aviary 2. Many of the same fabric prints in my favorite colors along with new colorways. I'll have to cut a little off each bolt and add it to my existing Aviary collection and stash it away until the perfect project comes along.

The newest colors of Manos Lace are amazing! Manos has always been my go-to yarn. When I have a project in mind to knit, I tend to gravitate toward Manos. Now, I'm not one to knit with lace weight yarn nor do I knit lace, but this yarn may just change my mind. Valentine's Garland

This is a great project to do this weekend for your Valentine. It's perfect for kids too.

Those are little felt balls between the hearts.

Supplies: 8 x 12 sheet of felt, pretty color staples, stapler, roving, tea diffuser, Kookaburra soap or other mild soap for felting, needle/thread

How To:

Fold and cut the sheet of felt in half (the long way), cut 1.5" strips of felt

Hold two strips of felt together and staple on end, make a heart shape and staple other end. Make as many hearts as you wish. Set aside and make felt balls

Fill a sink with warm/hot soapy water

Grab a clump of roving and fill the bottom half of the tea diffuser, close the diffuser, submerge in water and shake, then remove from the water and shake some more untill water no longer "splashes" This is fun for the kids to, or it's a great upper arm work out!

Remove the felt ball from the diffuser and let dry. You may have to shake it again later to get more water out.

String you hearts and felt balls and hang for your Valentine!

Super Bowl Knitting Project

I like to watch the Super Bowl, it's somewhat of a family affair, chili simmering, weenie dogs for apps, and brownies just in time for half-time. Like most of you, I'm sure, I need to knit while watching TV especially sports. I have to admit I did take a break from knitting to watch the commercials! This is the twisted rib cowl I knit up while watching Super Bowl XLV. I used Shokay Yak fiber, which is such a wonderful and soft yarn to knit with and to wear. Too bad I will not be wearing this one, it's a gift for my Aunt. But, I will be making one for myself soon only in a beautiful turquoise color. Did you knit during the Super Bowl? If so, tell me what you knit in the comments below, even better post a picture to Stash's facebook page. As you know, I love show and tell!

Here's the pattern so you can make one too!

Yarn: Shokay 100% Yak yarn 164 yds, one skein

Needles: US Size 9 16" circ

CO 83 sts, join for working in the round being careful not to twist.

*K2, P2, repeat until piece measures 9 inches.

Bind off LOOSELY!

I'm so excited about Patty Davis Design's Crochet Patterns. Being new to crochet I'm finding many new and fun patterns out there. If you don't know already, I'm loving Amigurumi! But these patterns are sure to inspire! I just love the Baby Bomber Jacket and Crochet Jean Jacket. My little guy may be just too big for the patterns, but I'm sure I can modify them to fit. Last week I went camping with the family, in the woods, in a tent! We had a great time, now it's back to work. When I arrived at the shop Thursday morning there were boxes waiting for me, then more boxes arrived that afternoon, and still more Friday afternoon. I'm finally caught up. Inside those boxes were:

New bolts of Fecility Miller Gypsy fabric.

Skacel lace-weight Filigran in beautiful blues and neutrals. This skein is 656 yards of wonderfully soft 100% superwash merino.

And new books too! Joel Dewberry's book Sewn Spaces may be my new favorite sewing book. Great patterns for all the spaces you work, play, and live. Sandi Henderson's Sewing Bits and Pieces has 35 projects to help use up all your fabric scraps.

We are doing a Stars Wars crochet-a-long the first and third Thursday night during Needle Arts. We started last night and had a good time. It's interesting to see how many different personalities come out in everybody's project. To start off, we decided to do the Stormtrooper. I can't wait to show more pictures of these little guys. Twinkle Soft Chunky and a Free Pattern

I am so excited about Twinkle's Soft Chunky! Wow! It is so soft and the colors are amazingly vibrant and it is so much fun to knit with. I've been looking for a great pattern to show off this wonderful yarn and I think I found it.

This pattern is called the "Really Warm Hat" It is a free download on Ravelry. If you are not apart of that wonderful community you can find it here. This hat took me just one hour including the finishing work and the extremely huge pom pom.

Manos has a new yarn and it is AMAZING! Lot o' skeins just arrived today. I may be a little selfish and keep them for myself. Just kidding, this yarn is just too great to keep for myself. Mini Sweaters - Free Pattern

You've been asking for it and now here it is...

The Mini Sweater Pattern! Hang 'em in your tree, wrap 'em around a bottle of wine for a gift, use 'em as gift toppers, the possibilities are endless!

Pattern:
Mini Sweater

Worsted weight yarn
Size 9 needles

CO 16 sts and work 3 rows garter st (knit all rows)
Next row: Purl
Work Stockinette stitch for 4"

CO 10 sts for sleeve (row 1) work next row as for pattern and CO 10 sts for other sleeve. (row 2)
work three more row for a total of 5 rows.

Knit 15 sts BO 6 sts, work to the end of the row
Next row: knit 15 sts CO 6 sts and work 4 rows

BO 10 sts on each end for sleeves.

Work to match the front.

BO all sts and sew up the sides; weave in loose ends.

This is a great pattern to use up scrap yarn. Don't be afraid to experiment with different yarn and needles, maybe a sport weight with a size 5 needle for a smaller sweater, try stripes for the first time, or a fair isle pattern. Have fun!
